Futurists base their concept of a rebuilt Babylon in Iraq on Old Testament passages. Protestants focus on Revelation 17, Mystery Babylon as a global religion. Both offer compelling arguments. Unfortunately, both emphasize the disparity between what appears to be multiple Babylons in the Bible. But are not all the various eschatological manifestations called Babylon? If Mystery Babylon as a religion and a rebuilt commercial Babylon are not one in the same, they must be variations of the same thing. In any event, there must be a continuity between them. This continuity is to be found in religion. Certainly, the theory of an Islamic Antichrist and a Muslim Babylon maintains the religious continuity, but here we propose a possible rebuilt Babylon in Protestant terms. This involves qualifying the destruction of Mystery Babylon by the ten kings. |
